Concerns raised over cars speeding along Queensway in Mildenhall after number of incidents
Concerns have been raised over cars speeding along a key road in Mildenhall after a number of incidents.
West Suffolk councillor Andy Neal has received complaints from residents about the speeding along Queensway which is a 30mph road.
To help solve the problem, he is eager to see several speed bumps installed in the road and wants the crossing raised by the junction outside the Mildenhall Hub.
Cllr Neal, who lives in the town and represents the Queensway ward, said: “It’s dangerous and worrying just how fast some cars are travelling along this road. The danger is enhanced with the school and all the services we have at the hub.
“Cars that come from the direction of West Row are a particular worry as they often are not going 30mph, despite a speed limit sign before they get to the hub, which is where lots of children cross the road and cars pull out from Comet Way.
“It can also be hard for drivers that are trying to pull out of roads like Wamil Way and Queens Drive.”
Cllr Neal said that Mildenhall High Town Council has previously received statistics from their speeding calming indicator, which is moved around the town, showing the number of times motorists have gone over the speed limit along Queensway, including one that was tracked at 72mph.
A Mildenhall resident said their parents, who live along Queensway, had two cars written off and lost multiple wing mirrors due to cars travelling too fast.
Cllr Neal has also raised concerns about the speed police cars travel along Queensway with their blue lights on after leaving their station at the Mildenhall Hub.
“I completely acknowledge that they need to get on their blue lights and get somewhere as quick as they can for emergencies,” he said.
“But when they’re doing 50mph or 60mph along that road, for the sake of a few seconds, I feel they need to respect the environment a little more when they’re passing through.”
Suffolk Police and Suffolk Highways have been approached for comment.
