It’s going to the wire for March Town and Wisbech Town

Both March Town and Wisbech Town face two crucial remaining games as they look to determine where they will be playing their football next season.

Wisbech’s 2-2 home draw on Saturday against promotion-chasing Heanor Town may look impressive on paper but leaves them still with the threat of relegation from the United Counties Premier North.

Fourth-place March Town fell to a second-consecutive United Counties Premier South home defeat when they were beaten 1-0 by fellow play-off challengers Daventry Town and a final place in the top five is no longer looking nailed on.

Sam Bennett gave 15th-place Wisbech the lead against fifth-place Heanor after six minutes on Saturday, but the on-form Lions hit back through Mason Booth-Davis nine minutes before the break.

Top scorer Bennett restored the lead eight minutes into the second half from the penalty spot with his ninth of the campaign from 19 games, but a goal for the visitors from Ethan Wiesztort after 74 minutes made the final score all-square.

With only Sleaford Town of the four teams immediately below them not winning, Luke Hipwell’s men are now four points from the relegation area, although their goal difference is worse than all but Deeping Rangers.

Wisbech travel to play tenth-place Melton Town next Saturday and then round the season off with what could be a crunch game at home to a Deeping side managed by former Fenmen manager Brett Whaley on Bank Holiday Monday.

At home to Daventry on Saturday, March were undone by a 68th minute goal by Connor Furey. The Hares are now just three points in front of Newport Pagnell who lead the pack chasing the play-off places, although, below them, Eynesbury Rovers and Daventry are four and five points behind respectively, but each with a game in hand.

However, it looks like the fixture list has been kind to Ash Taylor’s men and they end the season with games against two sides who are in the bottom four but who also look safe, so have little to play for.

On Saturday March travel to play Bugbrooke St Michaels and on Bank Holiday Monday they host Yaxley. Wins in both these games could also see The Hares gain home advantage in a play-off semi-final.

In the Thurlow Nunn First Division North, tenth-place Parson Drove lost 1-0 at home to promotion-chasing Harwich & Parkeston, Joe Knight netting for the opposition.

Drove wrap up their season by entertaining Gorleston Reserves on Saturday before a derby clash at Whittlesey Athletic on Bank Holiday Monday.

Whittlesey were without a game on Saturday and end their season with a trip to play-off chaisng FC Peterborough on Saturday before the derby clash with Drove.
